Curtis has small town roots, born and raised in Eight Mile, Alabama. As the youngest of 7 children, he was raised in a warm and loving family. His parents, John Hampton and Lora Mae Silcox, gave him the Godly foundation that he needed to fulfill the destiny of God for his life. Though there was a lot of love in their home, they did not usually have extras, and on some occasions, did not have enough for their large family’s needs. But Lora Mae would always use those times to teach her children about trusting in the Lord and about faith in God. Those lessons have not only helped sustain Curtis through the tough times, but have taught him that God is his supplier. His life today is a gentle reflection of that faith that was planted in his heart at a very young age.
After leaving home at the age of 16, he realized that whether or not he got an education was solely up to him. He chose to pursue an education, using scholarships for what he could and working 2 jobs to make up for the rest. God honored his hard work and he received a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Biology from Mobile College (now Mobile University). He later received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Psychology with a minor in Religion from Sanford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
During this time, he received the call of God into ministry and on July 23, 1969, preached his first sermon. Today, he laughs about how he preached his well prepared 30 minute sermon in only 5 minutes (boy, for the good old days!). Continuing in ministry, he evangelized and pastored throughout the state of Alabama. In 1979, he accepted a church appointment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at Villa Del Rey Church of God (now Maranatha Church of God), which he pastored for 11 years. While there he saw the church grow to over 500 members. He founded Cornerstone Academy, which became one of the largest Christian schools in the area. At their height, the school was running 720 students. The state of Louisiana began a Regents Scholar program that was patterned after the academics of Cornerstone. The beauty of which was displayed when the students graduated. It was stated that those graduating were able to name the college of their choice, if they chose to pursue higher education. During his final year as pastor, the #1 student in Math and the #2 student in Social Studies in the state attended Cornerstone. Curtis desired to see the students excel in all areas and become well rounded. He saw the football and basketball teams achieve success with 2 national championships in each category. God truly did bless his efforts at Villa Del Rey, but in 1990 he could not escape the tugging of the Holy Spirit on his heart to return to evangelism.
After much fasting and prayer, He decided to resign the church in 1990 and pursue evangelism full time. He established Good News Today (GNT) and began another faith walk with God. Those first years were tough, as Paula would stay home with the children, Deliska, Scott and Stephanie. To the outside world, it may have seemed like too big of a move, but to Curtis, he knew he HAD to obey God. He began his mission’s efforts by getting his feet wet in Russia. The doors to that country had just opened and he ran right through them! The stories are amazing of the miracles God did there, when the “Iron Curtain” fell. This first step would lead the way for him to go to Africa, Honduras, and of course, the rest of the world.
In 1997, Curtis felt the next move for Good News Today coming. All he knew was that he needed to be more centrally located in the United States and have land for the next phase of God’s vision. In February of that year, the entire family moved to the 43 acre plot of land outside of Fayetteville, Tennessee which is now known as “Belle Terre” (Beautiful Land).
Since then, GNT has grown in so many ways. Take a look at what God has done and continues to do.
As of 2007, Curtis is actively involved in China (including Hong Kong), 2 key Provinces in India, Iceland and South Africa (with outreaches from there into Malawi and Mozambique). Visit our Ministry Outreach page to learn more. Curtis Silcox remains on the cutting edge of ministry as he conducts revivals throughout the United States and around the world. He is a sought after speaker and is in high demand today. His message of healing and restoration transcends both denominational and cultural barriers alike. His heart is to see people’s lives transformed by the glorious power of Jesus Christ. He has no greater joy than when he is obeying the Father, by sharing His Word. Throughout the year, Curtis remains active on the mission field, averaging 4 mission’s trips a year. Pray for Curtis as he continues to walk out the vision of carrying the “Good News” of Jesus Christ into all the world.
